Trainers, this is a big one! Dataminers have discovered that Giratina (Origin Forme) moves have changed completely, introducing a new set of possibilities and making Origin Giratina meta relevant. Here are the new moves for Giratina (bold markes new):
|Old Fast moves||New Fast moves|
|Old Charge moves||New Charge moves|
With this change, we expect Origin Forme Giratina to become one of the best Ghost type attackers in Pokemon GO, given its stellar stats and access to Shadow Claw / Shadow Ball, the best available double Ghost moveset in the game.
If this move pool remains unchanged, SC/SB Giratina (Origin) will have much better TDO than SC/SB Gengar, but Gengar will still be the king of DPS:
(both Pokemon ranked with Shadow Claw / Shadow Ball moveset)
Stat wise, Origina Giratina is a great PvP dueler and a strong addition to most Ghost-based raiding teams: high attack stat, high stamina stat and solid (but not excellent) defense. All of this was severely hampered by Giratina’s previous moves:
Changes for Ghost-type moves
- Shadow Sneak (old) is one of the worst Ghost-type charge moves in the game. Shadow Ball (new) which replaced it is one of the best moves in the game, regardless of its type. Nice!
- Ancient Power (old) is an interesting move in PvP, but doesn’t benefit from STAB. Ominous Wind (new) is more or less the same move, just with Ghost typing instead of Rock. Fortunately, it has STAB!
Changes for Dragon-type moves
- Dragon Claw (old) is arguably better than Dragon Pulse (new), but nothing to worry about. Better Dragon-type attackers are already widely available (Dragonite, Rayquaza, Salamence) or coming relatively soon (Garchomp), and we don’t really suggest using Giratina as a Dragon type
- Dragon Breath (old) is also better than Dragon Tail (new), but follow the same logic as for Dragon Claw. Not much has been lost.
Overall, the new movesets bring Giratina to the inner circle of meta relevant Pokemon once again. Altered Forme will possibly remain the better choice for PvP (TBD, we’re investigating this at the moment), but Origin is shaping up to be a solid choice as well. We’ve updated our Giratina (Origin Forme) Raid Counters Guide with new moves, TTW and other relevant numbers.
